Last Wednesday I had another spa day with one of my best friends Brooke. We were talking about my family member’s illness and how they need to make lifestyle changes in order to increase their chance of healing. When we talk about lifestyle changes, we refer to making better food choices and not smoking.
As the conversation progressed, I started to realize that everything we were talking about was what we wanted for them. We weren’t even considering what they wanted for themselves. Although their best interest is in our mind, it doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness in their mind. We were so focused on prioritizing the quantity of their life and not focusing on the quality of living (from their perspective). Okay, so they may feel better eating healthier and not smoking as much but would they be happier if they aren’t making the choice themselves? In my last post, I mentioned that this person has no hobbies outside of work. Who am I to take away that little bit of joy they experience through eating and smoking?
Although it is my wish for them to have a better quality of life in terms of their health, it is of utmost priority to ensure they have the best quality of life with regards to their own personal happiness. Hypothetically, if they did make these lifestyle changes on their own accord, how will we know if they received any more years of their life? Was it worth it for them? Did they live a life of happiness during those potential extended years?
This relates back to my previous post, “live a life of life.” You can read it here: https://www.autumnmassage.com/post/live-a-life-of-life
My outlook still stands: do what makes you happy as long as you’re not harming anyone else. There is a gray area for the term “harming” someone, as it can be interpreted and argued in many ways (which I will talk about later). However, if there are two consenting adults who are sound of mind then I believe it is safe to explore one’s desires and fetishes. I believe a person should never feel bad for having urges to explore parts of themselves that may lead to a sense of happiness as this may create a gateway into a healthy hobby to decrease stress through temporary escape. Live a life of life despite what others think: it is your life to live.
